LOVE TREES

I've watched an animated cartoon today named Lorax (by Dr. Seuss). It was one of the best environmental movies I have ever seen.

Lorax, the keeper of trees.

The story is about a little boy, who wants to get a seed of tree which hadn't been seen since years. He lives in an "isolated" city, where everythig goes right...but there AREN'T ANY TREES in that place. So, he escapes often from this "jail" and visits a man outside who tells him the story of destroying forests.

I'm interested about environmentalism, so I was very excited while watching this movie. It shows a perfect presentation about how sneaky and selfish way we destroy our nature. Many people don't know how important forests are. Because trees:

  • PRODUCE OXYGEN FOR US. Did you know that "a mature leafy tree produces as much oxygen in a season as 10 people inhale in a year?" (Arbor Day Foundation) They are also important filters, that cleans the air.
  • GIVE SHADE AND CALM.
  • CONTROL NATURAL (AND ANOTHER) DIASTERS. (flooding, noise pollution, etc.)
  • INCREASE THE VALUE OF AN AREA.
15 square kms of rain forests disappear every minutes.

In fine, here is a quoute from the awesome Dr. Seuss. Think about it! :)

"Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot,
nothing is going to get better. It's not."

  1. I wonder how many trees are destroyed here in Serbia during the heating season... Though I think there are special companies who grow trees to sell them as firewood, and I hope they don't cut down natural forests. People use wattle and beech mostly, wattle grows very quickly but beech not. However, if the foresters cultivate these trees in a clever way there shouldn't be a problem at least here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firewood

Losing 15 square kms of rainforest per minute is shocking, I just don't believe this could still be true today... What is the source of this information?

  2. I found this video and article on deforestation in Brazil. This is a trusted source, imho :-)

  3. The source that I forget to mention is from WWF, this information was in an advertisement published in 2007.

I was looking for informations about deforestration here. Serbia isn't a developed country. I've heard about some movements against environmental issues, these are mostly in Belgrade and Novi Sad.

I've found a summary of Serbia and Montenegro's forest rate. (datas are from 2005). It is written that 26.41% of the area is covered by forests. But it's interesting that the 2,559,000 ha forests in 1990 developed to 2,694,000 ha for the year of 2005.

So that made me suprise, because I couldn't imagine that in Serbia forests aren't as much killed as in Brazil, for example. There is one appreciable area next to the main road going to Kanizsa. A whole part of the forest beside Tisza river is cut. This is awful.
